The judicial officer

Code of Ethics

The bailiff is subject to a code of ethics. This consists of a set of rules governing the way in which the bailiff carries out his or her duties and ensuring proper professional conduct.

This code sets out the essential principles that the bailiff must observe in the performance of his or her duties, such as impartiality, diligence, respect for individuals and confidentiality of information.

It also recalls the obligations relating to quality of service, transparency and the conduct expected in interactions with citizens.

By making this code accessible, the Bordet Office aims to help you better understand the ethical framework and commitments that guide its day‑to‑day activities.

Professional and Supervisory Authorities

Bailiffs are impartial, neutral and independent ministerial officers; nevertheless, their work is supervised, regulated and monitored by professional bodies.

These bodies may of course be contacted by any person wishing to obtain information or assistance.

At regional level, the BORDET Office falls under the jurisdiction of the District Chamber of Liège and Huy, as well as that of Verviers, and at national level under the National Chamber of Bailiffs and the legal and social expertise centre “SAM‑TES”.

In the event of a dispute with a bailiff, any litigant may contact the Ombudsman for Bailiffs, whose mission is to reconcile interests that are often opposed and to reach a compromise acceptable to both the consumer and the bailiff.
